Who doesn't love the warm glow and soothing scent of a candle? But before you light up, make sure you're following these essential candle safety tips to keep your home safe.
1. The Initiation
Every spell begins with patience. On your first burn, allow the wax to melt fully to the vessel’s edge. This sets your candle’s memory and ensures an even burn for every ritual to come. If the wax is extinguished too soon, it may tunnel and weaken the spell’s life. Give it time to open fully. Every flame deserves a proper beginning.
2. Wick's Tending
Before each burn, trim the wick to roughly ¼ inch. A shorter wick conjures a clean, even burn. If it's too long, it may create too much smoke or burn too hot, burning away the fragrance.
3. Sacred Space
Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, curtains, and curious familiars. Moving air can cause your flame to dance unevenly, leading to tunneling or smoke. Never leave your spell unattended; even a small flame carries potent energy.
4. Burn with Intention
Candles are designed to work slowly, releasing their spell with each pool of melted wax. Let yours burn for 2–4 hours at a time. Long enough for a full, even melt, never so long it overheats.
5. True Flame
If your wick drifts while the wax is soft, gently guide it back to center with a tool. A centered flame burns true and protects your vessel from uneven heat. A spell’s strength lies in its balance.
6. Veil the light
When your ritual comes to its end, avoid blowing out the flame. Snuff or cap it instead. This prevents sparks and keeps the air clear of smoke. The spell deserves a quiet close; let the light fade, not die in haste.
7. Preserve the spell
Magic dies in harsh light. Keep your candle away from direct sunlight and heat, as both can dull the fragrance and warp the wax. When not in use, cover it to preserve the scent’s potency. Let it rest in the dark.
8. Final Flicker
When about ½ inch of wax remains, the ritual is complete. Continuing to burn beyond this point risks overheating the glass and breaking the spell. Let the flame rest, and begin preparing for your next intention.
9. Death's Calling
Once cooled, cleanse the vessel and grant it a second life. A keeper of crystals, a planter, or a resting place for new spells. Or return it to the earth through recycling, letting its energy flow back into the cycle. What ends in wax may rise again in another form.
